Our Steers (Boys)

Our Steers (Boys)

In the beginning we tried raising our steers on pasture.  Holstein steers cannot handle the cold, wet weather like other breeds.  We discovered our boys (steers) could not handle the cold, wet conditions of the spring, fall and winter months.  Though we tried very hard we were unable to keep them warm and dry.   Plus the lack of availability in our area for land, we wouldn't have enough land to pasture the number of cattle needed to sustain our business.  With the size of our individual pens, the steers have plenty of room to lay comfortably and play.  We enjoy seeing the cattle cozy and comfortable in all weather conditions.

So we decided to start purchasing our steers from another farm at about 650 lbs average.  We raise them in our 2 barns, that have 9 pens total for both barns and each barn is 36' x 200'.  There are 21 steers in each pen.  Every month when we get a new load in, every pen will shift down to the next pen.  So It is, all in and all out.  The cattle are fed daily with a TMR ration that consist of Corn Silage, High Moisture Corn, Distillers and a mineral pack.  All feed ingredients are grown on the farm.

Each barn gets cleaned all the way out every 2 weeks and fresh sawdust is put back in.  That way the cattle stay clean, dry and comfortable in all weather conditions.
